FAQ: Costs & Payments for Surrogacy Programs in Mexico

Parents deserve clarity. Below you’ll find straightforward answers about surrogacy programs in Mexico regarding costs and payments.

Q: How are payments structured in the Mexico program?

A: Payments are divided into two categories:

  1. Medical, legal, and program management fees are paid directly to SMARTPath in the United States.

  2. Surrogate compensation is paid directly by the intended parents according to the financial schedule in the surrogacy agreement.

Q: Why are payments to the surrogate made directly by the Intended Parents?

A: The Mexico program requires direct payment from intended parents to the surrogate. This ensures transparency, complies with Mexican payment norms, and keeps the financial terms exactly aligned with the Surrogacy Agreement.

Q: How often are surrogates in Mexico paid during pregnancy?

A: Surrogates are paid according to the payment schedule in their Surrogacy Agreement. Payments occur at specific milestones such as contract signing, confirmation of pregnancy, the week-12 milestone, and others outlined in the surrogate’s individualized contract.

Q: Can I pay by credit card?

A: Credit cards may be used for SMARTPath agency and medical payments, with a 3.5% processing fee. Wire transfers and other U.S.-based methods are also available.
Surrogate compensation cannot be paid by credit card and must be transferred directly to the surrogate.

Q: How do I know my payments are secure?

A: All agency and medical payments are made to a U.S. bank account with clear invoices and receipts. Surrogate payments are made under a legally binding contract schedule and are documented directly between the intended parents and the surrogate. SMARTPath follows strict confidentiality and security practices for financial transactions.

Q: How involved can intended parents be if we’re not in Mexico?

A: Very. You can receive regular summaries and ultrasound images/videos, join key appointments by video, and stay in touch via your coordinator. You’re informed and included.

Q: Are there any unexpected costs for surrogacy programs in Mexico?

A: Core program costs are defined in advance. Additional costs may arise for services such as biotransport, extra medical testing, rematching, additional embryo-transfer attempts, legal steps for passport or citizenship, and intended parent travel. Your coordinator will guide you through any expenses related to the situation.
