When it comes to surrogacy, there’s a lot of curiosity and even more misinformation. At SMARTPath Fertility, we constantly hear it: questions, assumptions, and myths that just don’t reflect the truth of what this journey actually looks like.

To dispel these misconceptions, we are initiating a new series. In each post, we’ll tackle some of the most common misconceptions about surrogacy, starting with these three.

MYTH 1: “Surrogates are just doing it for the money.”

Let’s get real. Yes, surrogates are compensated for their time, energy, and the physical toll pregnancy takes. But if you think that’s the main reason they do it, you’re missing the bigger picture.

Most surrogates describe their journey as one of the most meaningful experiences of their lives. Many are drawn to it because they had easy or fulfilling pregnancies and want to give that gift to someone who can't do it on their own. The money helps support their own families, yes—but it’s the heart behind the decision that drives them.

MYTH 2: “The surrogate is the baby’s biological mother.”

This is one of the most persistent myths—and it couldn’t be further from the truth. In gestational surrogacy, which is what we work with at SMARTPath, the surrogate has no genetic connection to the baby she carries.

IVF creates the embryo using the intended parents' or donor's egg and sperm and transfers it into the surrogate's uterus. She’s the carrier, not the biological parent.

MYTH 3: “Surrogates can change their mind and keep the baby.”

This one is scary for intended parents, and we get it. But here’s the good news: legal protections are in place before the embryo transfer ever happens. Surrogacy contracts are reviewed, agreed upon, and signed by both parties with the help of experienced legal professionals.

The intended parents are the baby’s legal parents from the start. The surrogate’s role is clear, honored, and protected—and everyone moves forward with full understanding and mutual respect.

Why This Matters

Surrogacy is more than a transaction. It’s an act of love, trust, and shared hope. And when we debunk these myths, we create more space for real understanding, better communication, and stronger support—for both surrogates and intended parents.

Whether you're considering becoming a surrogate, growing your family through surrogacy, or just want to learn more—stick with us. This installment is just the beginning of a new series, and we’re excited to keep shining a light on the truth behind the journey.
